How We Clean a Prefab Steel Fireplace Chimney, From the Bottom Up

October 10, 2026 · 3 min read · Chimney Sweep Master, Cary, IL

A soft rotary brush, working from inside the fireplace up through the chimney, cleans a factory-built fireplace without scratching it or spreading dust. Here's how it works.

Chimney sweep cleaning a prefab steel fireplace from the bottom up with a rotary brush

If you have a prefabricated steel fireplace, the kind built in a factory with a metal firebox and a metal chimney pipe, it needs a different touch than a brick fireplace. Here's what happens when we sweep one, and why we work from the bottom up.

Why the brush matters

Factory-built chimneys are made of metal parts designed to fit together. A stiff wire brush can scratch or damage them, so we use a soft-bristle rotary brush. It spins on flexible rods, reaches the flue walls evenly, and loosens soot and creosote without harsh scraping. We always follow the fireplace manufacturer's instructions for the equipment we use.

Why we start from the bottom

  • Less mess in your home. We seal off the opening, and the debris falls down into the firebox, where a vacuum pulls it away as we work. That's how we keep our cleaning dust-free.
  • Safer for the chimney. We don't have to put weight on the cap or the chimney sections just to clean the inside.
  • Better control. We can see and feel what the brush is doing as we go.

What we check while we clean

A sweep is also an inspection. Once the cleaning is complete, we can visually inspect the firebox panels and the damper, the metal chimney sections, signs of rust or overheating, and the cap and top of the chimney for any imperfections. If we find anything that needs repair, we'll quote it afterward, either as a written quote or a verbal quote.

What to expect as a homeowner

You'll see protective cloths laid down around the fireplace, a vacuum running, and a brush working up through the flue. When we're done, we clean up and show you what we found. If there's a hard, shiny creosote glaze that a soft brush can't loosen, we'll explain it and talk through the right treatment.
