Burn Drier, Burn Better! Use Dry Wood for a Cleaner Fire, More Heat, and Less Smoke

October 27, 2026 · 5 min read · Chimney Sweep Master, Cary, IL

Seasoned, dry firewood burns hotter, makes less smoke and leaves less creosote in your chimney. Here's how to tell if your wood is dry enough, and the four steps to get it there.

The single easiest thing you can do for a better fire costs nothing extra: burn seasoned, dry firewood. As a chimney sweep in Cary, IL, we see the difference every fall. Homes that burn dry wood have cleaner flues, brighter fires and fewer smoke complaints.

Why dry firewood matters

Freshly cut wood can be half water by weight. Before it can burn properly, the fire has to boil that water off. Seasoned wood skips that step, so more of its energy goes into heating your room instead of making steam.

Wet wood means more smoke and less heat

  • A wet log smolders instead of flaming, so you get more smoke inside and outside the house.
  • Energy spent drying the wood is heat you never feel.
  • Smoldering fires leave dirty glass doors and a smoky smell.
  • Wood smoke contains fine particles that can bother anyone, especially children, older adults and people with asthma or heart disease.

How wet wood builds creosote

A cool, smoky fire sends unburned gases up the flue. They condense on the cooler chimney walls as creosote, a tar-like deposit that can catch fire. Dry firewood burns hotter and cleaner, which helps with creosote prevention, though it does not replace an annual chimney inspection.

The 20% rule and how to use a moisture meter

Properly dried firewood should have a moisture content of 20% or less. A basic moisture meter costs about $20 at most hardware stores. To test a piece: split it, push the meter's pins into the freshly split face (not the end or the bark), and read the number. Test a few pieces from different parts of the pile. If it reads above 20%, give it more time.

Four steps: split, stack, cover, store

  • Split: split wood dries much faster. Cut a range of sizes that fit your stove or fireplace, no larger than about 6 inches across, plus small pieces for kindling.
  • Stack: stack in a single row, split side down, off the ground on pallets or racks, and away from buildings so air can circulate.
  • Cover: cover the top of the stack against rain and snow, but leave the sides open and keep space between the cover and the wood.
  • Store: give it time. Softwoods take about 6 months and hardwoods about 12. Dry wood is lighter and sounds hollow when two pieces are knocked together.

A cleaner fire, every time

  • Start small with dry kindling, then add a few pieces of wood.
  • Give the fire plenty of air until it is burning vigorously.
  • Never burn garbage, treated lumber or saltwater driftwood, and check for local burn bans.
  • A smoldering fire or smoky, dirty glass is a sign the wood is too wet or the fire needs air.

Why an annual chimney inspection still matters

Even with perfect firewood, a chimney can hide cracked flue tiles, a failing damper, animal nests or creosote you cannot see from the room. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) recommends an inspection every year, with cleaning as needed.
