How often should a wood stove chimney be cleaned?

Start with a yearly professional inspection, then adjust cleaning to the deposits, your burning habits and the stove manufacturer's instructions.
There is no single cleaning interval that suits every wood stove. A stove used for daily heat can put far more smoke through its chimney than a fireplace used a few evenings a year. EPA guidance recommends annual professional inspection of the wood-burning appliance, chimney and vent. Cleaning and service should follow the condition found and the manufacturer's instructions.
Inspection and cleaning are different decisions
A yearly inspection is a baseline even if you burned little wood. It can identify obstructions, deterioration and connection problems as well as deposits. But an annual appointment is not permission to ignore buildup or performance changes during the heating season. A heavily used system may need attention sooner.
Soot and creosote can hide damage. Where deposits prevent a useful visual check, cleaning makes inspection possible. A clean-looking portion of pipe does not establish the condition of all sections above it. The stove, connector and chimney need to be considered together, with access planned for that particular installation.
What can make deposits build faster
Damp wood, prolonged smoldering and operation outside the stove's instructions can contribute to deposits. Use the fuel and operating practices the manufacturer specifies. EPA guidance encourages dry wood; a moisture meter can help assess a freshly split face rather than guessing from the appearance of bark.
Do not try to burn a chimney clean with an unusually hot fire. Creosote is combustible, and igniting it in the flue is a chimney fire—not maintenance. Store and dispose of ashes appropriately, and keep combustible items away from the stove and connector. Those everyday habits complement professional service rather than replacing it.
Signs not to wait for the next annual visit
New smoke spillage, unusual difficulty establishing draft or visible heavy deposits warrant a check. Those symptoms can also have causes other than dirt, so cleaning should not be promised as the cure without evaluation. If you suspect blockage or damage, stop using the stove until the system has been assessed.
A roaring sound, unusual heat or flames from the chimney may indicate a chimney fire. Leave the home and call emergency services rather than attempting a routine service request. After a suspected chimney fire, the system needs professional evaluation before it is used again, even if the stove seems to operate normally.
What to send with a wood stove booking
Include the stove make and model, how often you burn, your usual fuel and the date of the last service. Share accessible photographs of the stove and connector without dismantling anything. Our $290 standard single-flue open-fireplace price is not automatically a wood stove price; we discuss the scope for your installation separately.
