Should I convert my wood fireplace to gas? Cost and options

October 18, 2026 · 3 min read · Chimney Sweep Master, Cary, IL

Gas can make a fireplace more convenient, but the best choice depends on whether you mainly want a flame view, useful heat or to keep burning wood.

Switching from wood to gas is a preference, not a rule that every homeowner should follow. Some people enjoy preparing and tending a wood fire. Others want less ash, less wood handling and easier startup. Before comparing products, decide what you want the fireplace to do: provide an occasional flame view or deliver meaningful room heat.

Vented gas logs: mainly about the flame

A vented log set can sit in a suitable existing fireplace and produce the flame appearance many homeowners want. The chimney still has a venting job, and much of the heat can leave through it. Logs are not the same equipment as an enclosed insert, so they should not be compared as if both provide the same heating performance.

The fireplace must be approved and suitable for the installation. The log-set instructions determine clearances, placement and damper requirements. Do not assume that any factory-built fireplace accepts any gas log set, and do not change a required damper clamp to seal an idle fireplace more tightly.

Gas inserts: a different approach to heat

An insert is an appliance fitted into an appropriate existing fireplace with the venting arrangement specified for it. It can provide more useful heat than an open vented log set, depending on the model and installation. Its dimensions, clearances, gas requirements and venting have to match the existing opening and structure.

An insert does not make a damaged chimney structure irrelevant. The fireplace and chimney still need assessment before work is specified. Manufacturer instructions and applicable local codes guide the installation. A qualified installer should explain what needs to change rather than simply connect gas to an unassessed fireplace.

What affects conversion cost?

There is no fixed conversion price on our site. Equipment choice, the existing gas supply, required line work, venting, controls and any fireplace repairs all affect the scope. A log-set quote and an insert quote can differ because they include different appliances and work, not merely different brand names.

Ask what is included: equipment, connections, required venting, startup, controls and any necessary permit or inspection arrangements. Do not assume the fireplace opening in a photograph proves that a particular model will fit. Measurements and the product's installation requirements are needed before a reliable recommendation.

How to start the comparison

Send a photograph of the full opening, the fireplace's accessible model label and a note about whether gas is already present. Tell us whether your priority is heat or appearance. After cleaning and a visual inspection where needed, any repairs are quoted afterward, in writing or verbally. If you smell gas at any time, leave the home and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
